Hi, I’m Julie from the blog Lilacs & Longhorns and I’m so happy to be posting here at Girl in the Garage today while Jen is getting a little R & R.
Just like Jen, I love transforming and repurposing furniture.
Such was the case with my little china hutch.
I bought it on Craig’s List and this is what it looked like in the ad:
I was making over my dining room and was looking for something just like it. It was the perfect width and depth but it was just a little bit short.
Nevertheless, I knew I could fix it up and make it work in my space.
First, I painted the piece using Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Old Violet. I gave it about three coats of paint and then 3 coats of clear wax, sanding in between each coat of wax to give the appearance a little more depth.
I wallpapered the back of the inside with a beadboard textured wallpaper. Then, I painted it with a creamy white latex paint.
I love the contrast of the light interior with the Old Violet.
I cleaned up the existing hardware using Brass-o. Didn’t it shine up nicely?
When I was done with the main body of the hutch, I added some legs to give the piece more height.
I bought some bun feet at Home Depot, painted them and waxed them and then installed them.
It was very easy.
I used these little t-nuts.
I simply drilled holes in the bottom of the hutch, hammered in the t-nut and screwed on the legs.
Done.
I absolutely love how this hutch turned out.
It is exactly what I was looking for to complete my updated dining room.
My little china hutch is still my favorite project to date. It makes me happy every time I look at it.
Thank you, Jen, for letting me fill in for you while you’re out.
I’d love it if you all stop by my blog to see some of my recent projects. If you do, please leave me a comment letting me know that Jen sent you!

Gorgeous! What a fantastic job you did Julie. This shade of blue is absolutely soooo calming and very pretty. Walls are also a great color. Nice blue & white dishes! I’ve always been a b & w fan.
My only gripe is with brown. Anything brown. Or tans. Ugh. If one can decorate with browns, they can go with grays or greens instead. Makes all the difference in the decor.
Browns have always been on my “do not do” list ….. forever. Very boring and dull. Does not photographs well and makes everything look tacky. Folks have a habit of overdoing it w/browns, tans and awful beige.
If you’ve ever noticed when someone is wearing brown/beige clothing on tv …. their appearance dowdy. Of course I love brown hair, brown eyes and brown wooden furniture is perfectly fine!
P.S. Time to check out your blog and subscribe!

Hi Julie, The cabinet looks beautiful. I have a small cabinet like that too. Its been sitting in the garage for 10 years! I have always wanted to try AS chalk paint on it, but never got around to it yet. I was just wondering. Do you sand in between each coat of paint also? Or just after each wax coat? Thanks! Enjoy your beautiful piece and the weekend too!

Thanks, Kelly!

Thanks, Marcee. I love blues and whites, too.
I guess differences are what make the world go around because I love brown with blue and am not a big fan of green. lol 🙂

Hi CArol Jane,
On this piece I did a little bit of sanding of the paint but you don’t have too. It just depends on the amount of distressing you want to do –it doesn’t matter for adhesion. I happened to sand mostly in between coats of wax to get the depth that appears in the color and also to distress certain areas of the piece. I happen to love using ASCP..you should give it a try!
Thanks so much for your kind comments!

Your china cabinet transformation is beautil. I’m in the process of cleaning out my Mother’s home she passed away last year. I have the same cabinet it was in her living room. I was wondering if you wouldn’t mind me asking what you purchased it for on Craig’s List? I have no idea what it would should be sold for or if I should keep it and restore it? Problem is I have enough of my own things and at this point have no room for it. Any help you could give me would be grateful appreciated.
